Choosing the right power gardening tools to tackle the demands of a healthy garden is paramount. Not only will they help produce great results, they can also make gardening more enjoyable by removing a lot of the hard, physical work.

Cordless garden tools

RYOBI’s robust and powerful 36V garden tools are not only simple to use, but they’ve also been engineered with these challenges in mind.

The 36V range comprises lawn mowers, line trimmers and brushcutters, hedge trimmers and pole trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, sprayers, cultivators, pruners, chainsaws, shredders and mulchers and a plethora of attachments and accessories. And they all share the same 36V battery platform that delivers long runtimes that benefit the demands of larger gardens.

So, you can say goodbye to petrol power (and the associated hassles with noise, exhaust fumes, tricky chokes and difficult pull cords) or cumbersome 240V extension cords.

Many RYOBI 36V garden tools have HPTM Brushless motors that provide extra performance when you need it and are optimised for even more power and longer runtimes when paired with 36V HP batteries – just what you need to create, shape and maintain a larger garden.

Just pick up a tool, attach a battery, squeeze the trigger and away you go. It’s never been easier to get – and maintain – the garden you’ve always wanted.

How to care for lawns

Nothing personifies a well-loved garden more than a beautifully manicured lawn – a lush carpet of green defined by crisp edges and neat garden beds or hedges. But lawns like this don’t happen by chance. For starters, they require regular mowing to keep the grass healthy by allowing sunlight and rainwater to penetrate to the roots.

Make sure your lawn mower’s blades are kept sharp as dull or worn blades can damage the grass and result in a brown-tipped, ragged-looking lawn.

Watering in a ‘weed and feed’ fertiliser also helps keep the lawn healthy and looking its best.

And, if you’re really serious about having the best-looking lawn on the block, twice-yearly scarifying, where the thatch is removed, can help to deliver great results.

Don’t neglect the lawn edges. Line trimmers do a terrific job of keeping edges looking sharp and are the best, quickest way to trim around lawn obstacles, like trees, planter boxes, play equipment, and the like.

In autumn and winter, remove errant fallen leaves with a garden blower. Left to rot on the grass, leaves can block sunlight and damage a lawn.

RYOBI also has tools such as sprayers for fertiliser and insecticide, seed spreaders and more.

Lawn care for beginners

We’ve put together some of our best Lawn Care 101 tips that you can use to keep your lawn looking fresh and green.

How to prune trees

Basically, there are two types of pruning – tip pruning and hard pruning.

Hard pruning for trees

Part of the appeal of a larger garden is the space it can dedicate to trees. Not only are larger trees pleasing on the eye, but they can be functional, too. Their canopies provide shade and shelter, and are often a haven for wildlife. However, keeping these trees healthy and within the bounds of your property can pose its own challenges.

Hard pruning is the opportunity to reshape trees and larger plants, as well as removing dead or damaged branches. In some cases it is essential for good plant health and is your opportunity to prune trees into their desired shape. It can also promote future growth.

Consider removing any branches overhanging roof lines that can fill roof gutters with leaves and debris, causing overflows and flooding in a downpour or catching fire in a bushfire-prone area.

You may also want to discuss pruning branches that overhang neighbours’ fences (or ones that encroach on your garden from the other side).

RYOBI’s 36V chainsaws and pole pruners are ideal for pruning trees, especially tall and sprawling species. The RYOBI 36V Pole Pruner – an 8” mini chainsaw on a telescoping pole – extends your reach by up to 2.9m to tackle high and overhanging branches.

How to prune shrubs

Why is it that as soon as you take your eyes off certain shrubs, they change from being neat and compact to wild and woody? Thankfully, RYOBI’s pruning tools tame ‘shape-shifting’ plants, keeping them manageable and looking their best year-round.

HINT: Don’t prune your plants when you’re in a bad mood (ha!).

Tip pruning for hedges

It appears Aussies and Kiwis love a hedge. But not everyone knows the best way to care for one. It’s almost counterintuitive to think that pruning a hedge will help it grow, but that’s basically what tip pruning does.

Tip pruning is great for maintenance as it’s just removing the tips of branches. But, as a rule of thumb, every branch you tip prune should sprout a new branch, hence doubling the growth. The result – a thick, solid-looking hedge that can be shaped to suit your garden.

A hedge trimmer is a great tip pruner, designed specifically for this task.

Warning: in growing season (spring) avoid tip pruning and maybe prune a bit harder if you don’t want your plants to potentially ‘go mad’.

How to keep lawns & paths clear

Finally, keep your garden and paths neat and tidy with a 36V garden blower or blower/vac. After mowing and line trimming, blow the grass clippings and debris into a pile for collection.

A leaf blower is also a great tool for keeping garden mulch off your lawn and back where it belongs.

Tip: Use a garden vac for this task if your backyard also contains a pool.
