Line trimmers put the finishing touches to a manicured lawn – crisp edges, neatly trimmed pavers, well defined paths and drives, clean fence lines and no unruly weeds growing around trees and other lawn obstacles. Importantly, line trimmers can go where a mower can’t.To get the most out of your line trimmer, there are some simple do’s and don’ts to follow.
Even when used properly, line trimmers can flick up debris so it pays to protect yourself by wearing appropriate PPE. Always wear eye protection, appropriate closed-toed footwear, and long pants. And don’t remove that line trimmer guard! Also, be wary about using a line trimmer near onlookers, windows and vehicles as flying debris can cause harm or damage.
Not only does the guard help to protect you from flying debris, but many models also have a blade attached to it that regulates the length of the line feed. Without that blade, line can become too long which stops the trimmer working effectively.
Keep your new, unused spool of line in a plastic container of water, like a bucket. This stops it from becoming brittle, keeping it supple and less likely to break.
A common mistake some gardeners make is replacing the original line with a thicker one. Often this is due to frustration of their current line breaking too frequently (see above tip). Before changing line diameters, check with your model’s manual about which diameter/type is best suited to your trimmer.
Too thick a line can strain the trimmer’s motor, potentially causing damage. It can also unbalance the trimmer, making it more difficult to manoeuvre. You may even void the tool’s warranty by using the wrong size trimming line.
Make sure that the handle is at the right and positioned correctly on the line trimmer shaft to avoid back strain. This handle is designed to provide better user ergonomics, so adjust it to suit your height, stance, etc.
Line trimmers are power-hungry tools, therefore they can deplete batteries quickly. While trimming a lawn is not usually a lengthy task, having too small a battery (or one not fully charged) might not complete the task on a single charge.
A much larger battery (8Ah or above) with lots of runtime also might be too heavy to comfortably complete the trimming task and may upset the balance of the tool. If in doubt, use the Goldilocks method – not too big and not too small ... a 4Ah battery usually hits the sweet spot. But experiment to see which battery is best suited for your gardens.
Cordless, or battery-powered line trimmers, are practically maintenance free. Unlike traditional petrol-powered line trimmers, they are lightweight, easy to start and quieter to run.
Basically, the only noise you hear is the whirring of the trimming line.
They emit no nasty exhaust fumes, either.
Just attach a battery, squeeze the trigger and start trimming. It’s that easy.
Think, no struggling with pull cords, no difficult chokes to master, no oil or fuel to store or mix, and practically no maintenance.
RYOBI’s user-friendly range of 36V line trimmers make gardening easy.
Even restringing the line is easy. RYOBI line trimmers with RYOBI’s Bump Feed Reel-Easy heads can be restrung in less than 60 seconds!
What’s more, RYOBI WhisperTM Series products are even quieter than the standard RYOBI battery-powered models. That’s better for you ... and your neighbours. (RYOBI has WhisperTM Series leaf blowers, too.)
There are even line trimmers with a lightweight carbon fibre shaft that absorbs vibration for an even better trimming experience.
RYOBI’s Expand-IT range consists of compatible accessories that connect to a single 36V or 18V power head, saving money and storage space in your shed or garage. The Expand-IT range includes a line trimmer, as well as an edger, brushcutter, hedge trimmer, cultivator, pruner, extension pole and sweeper.
RYOBI's line trimmers are lightweight and easy to handle, with powerful engines that make quick work of trimming and edging tasks.
